French President's Decision to Restrict Certain Uses of BPA Directly Contradicts Scientific Evidence and European Regulatory Approvals

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 2, 2013) – The following statement can be attributed to Steven G. Hentges, Ph.D., of the Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) regarding the French President signing legislation on Dec. 24th  to impose restrictions on all bisphenol A (BPA)-based food contact materials:

“The French President’s approval of legislation that will restrict BPA in all food-contact materials ignores decades of scientific evidence, European Food Safety Authority reviews, and European Union experts.

“This decision is at odds with government and scientific bodies around the globe which have extensively evaluated the weight of scientific evidence on BPA and have declared that BPA is safe as used, including in materials that come into contact with food.”
